My Spring-o-lators Collection - Fabulous Sexy Shoes from the 50's & 60's

Welcome to the showcase of my personal collection of Spring-o-lators. This page will be updated with additions from my personal collection and interesting facts for your enjoyment. Just how many Spring-o-lators do I own, you ask? Well, I am not sure...there are the ones that are in my size and then there are those I have acquired on eBay and locally. There are many that have a special place in my heart for their unique beauty and style even though I may not be able to enjoy wearing them personally.

PURCHASED IN THE 1980'S, THESE ARE MY MOST GLAMOUROUS SPRING-O-LATORS FOR SPECIAL OCCASIONS!

These are my first Spring-o-lators, made of the softest black suede and trimmed with leather and gold studs in a size 9M by Mackey Starr. They were purchased at a Baltimore landmark, Kent's of Broadway, back in the late 1980's and were quite expensive but I just had to have them! Kent's of Broadway was THE place that burlesque performers up and down the East Coast, including the likes of Blaze Starr and Tempest Storm, came to for all their costume accessories, including custom-made stripper gowns, pasties and g-strings, as well as a limited selection of high heels, mostly Polly's of California wood platform mules which for the performers were much easier to slide out of than Spring-o-lators. Kent's is no longer in business, partly due to the age of the owners, the changing style of pulchritute and the decline in the "womanly art of seduction" when it seemed everyone did the nasty-thing on the first date. (We are talking about the 1980's.)

THESE FERNCRAFT SPRING-O-LATORS HAVE THE VERY SLIM AND TAPERED

The ultra-thin stiletto heel was an engineering marvel, as it usually was a plastic molded heel with a steel pin running up the length of it to which the rubber or leather heel was attached. This design feature was very noticable on the clear lucite heels that were often adorned with rhinestones and carved designs much like expensive crystal stem-ware. For a short time, a metal tap (or heel) was popular until office owners had to invest in expensive repairs to their linoleum floors which had been scared and gouged by these "feminine" heels.

I HAD TO WAIT YEARS BEFORE FINDING THESE PRETTIES IN MY SIZE BUT IT WAS WORTH THE WAIT!

HIGH FASHION AND ELEGANCE FOR AN EVENING AT THE THEATER OR OPERA

These custom made Spring-o-lators have a special place in my collection as they come with a matching, oversized clutch style purse. They are soooo 1950's! (But I think they aren't that old!) These shoes have a very small peep toe opening, unlike most Spring-o-lator mules. Now the search is on for the perfect summer dress to wear with these beautiful shoes. Maybe Richard at Eon's in Shadyside has just the thing in his collection of vintage clothing!
